What Is a Sailcloth Tent

A sailcloth tent is a peaked-pole event tent built from translucent, coated fabric stretched between solid wooden centre poles and perimeter poles. The fabric forms sculpted peaks and eaves, and the translucent weave allows daylight through during the day and emits a soft glow when lit from inside at night. Sailcloth tents originated in the marine industry, where the same fabric type is used for sails, and were adapted for outdoor weddings, garden events, and luxury hospitality.

Sailcloth tents are visually distinct from PVC marquees and frame tents. The wooden poles, sculpted peaks, and translucent fabric give a more refined finish that suits weddings, country venues, and high-end events.

How Our Sailcloth Tents Are Built

Each Star Tents sailcloth unit is a five-component assembly: the sailcloth roof, the wooden pole system, the keder rail sidewall channel, the optional sidewalls, and the optional festive flags and finishing details.

Translucent Coated Sailcloth Fabric

Our sailcloth tent roofs are made from high-tensile, translucent coated sailcloth. The fabric is 100% waterproof, UV-treated, and treated to resist mould and algae growth. Translucency is what gives the tent its daylight and evening glow appearance, and the coating gives the same fabric its weatherproof performance.

Solid Wooden Pole Construction with King Pole Joiner

Centre poles and perimeter poles are solid wooden poles, chosen for visual character and structural stability. Our king pole joiner system splits centre poles into transportable sections that join on site, which makes a full-size sailcloth tent practical to transport, store, and reinstall. This joinery is the difference between a sailcloth tent that is set up once and a sailcloth tent used as part of a rental fleet or seasonal venue.

Keder Rail Sidewall System

Sidewalls install via a keder rail channel along the perimeter of the tent. The rail accepts both coated solid sidewalls and clear PVC sidewalls. Installation is quick, sidewalls can be removed or swapped between events, and the rail forms a watertight and windproof seal once closed.

Optional Sidewall Specifications

Sidewalls are optional, supplied in either solid coated sailcloth or clear PVC. Both options are 100% waterproof. Sidewalls install on the keder rail in minutes and remove for fully open-air event configurations.

Optional Festive Flags and Finishing

Festive flags, customised pole banners, and other finishing details are available on order. These are aesthetic finishes commonly specified for weddings and venue installations.

Before buying a second-hand sailcloth tent, check the fabric translucency (UV degradation discolours the fabric), seam integrity, pole condition (wooden poles can split if stored badly), and the working state of the keder rail.
